The strength of your jawbone is very important to your general dental health. If your jawbone is weakened from missing teeth or physical trauma, you may need a bone graft so your jaw can securely fit both your natural teeth and dental implants. Bone grafting helps to reinforce and rebuild your jawbone until it is dense enough to hold a dental implant. At East Village Dental Center, bone grafting is offered to prepare your jaw for subsequent dental implant surgery to replace missing or weak teeth. Schedule an appointment with one of our periodontal dentists at our office in New York, NY to get more information on bone graft surgery.
Who Can Have a Bone Graft?
Your jawbone may be weak if you have some oral conditions, like gum disease, or if you have experienced physical trauma to your mouth. The jawbone may begin to atrophy (waste away) if a tooth is missing and it wasn't replaced with removable dentures or a bridge. A bone graft builds up the jaw and prepares you for a dental implant; however, you'll need to be willing to commit time to the process. Bone grafting may take several months to complete — in the end, though, you will have a stronger, healthier jawbone that will support not only your dental implant but also your natural teeth for better overall oral health.
East Village Dental Center Reviews
Updated 1/30/2023 - Not sure what’s happened at East Village Dental however I think it’s a change in the management team that handles customer service. While they have updated the way they conduct business when you call they rarely pick up the phone, they do not return calls, they don’t have an emergency line for concerns post surgery. After an uncovering I developed canker sores and called them for a follow up they told me they’d call me back and instead I went the entire weekend in pain (see attached photo at your discretion). I did use warm water and salt to soothe the area but maybe they could have prescribed something to alleviate the pain which led to several days of headaches. There was little concern about my pain/discomfort which I’m very surprised from a place that I really liked and highly recommended just 1-2 years ago. After my crowns are in place I’m not sure I’ll go to them for a cleaning letting alone any serious oral surgery. Until they get a team that’s actually concerned about the customer/Patient stay away from EVD. Update [3/23/2023]: The office manager did call me and assured me that they will note my concerns and look to conduct better care of patients moving forward. I did feel she was sincere and have since then updated my review. I hope they continue to work on their patient care services as they are a vital team in the community.
I need to see the Dr
Today, only one receptionist was at the front. dental assistant signed in, then she asked to fill out the form from previous time, then the front desk said " hey :) you’ve already done this....." i figured if you make an appointment around noon, everyone goes out for lunch. So, one person can’t handle herself. Inside is very clean, water is provided for every patients. At the entrance, there a slope. Once they know you, they’re friendly, I believe. Waiting area has a TV and they’re shopping very Negative documentary show, I think they’ll have to change that... It’s very Loud and can’t even relax before you’re called. There’s a super Marcket one block from there. M9 bus is running every 10min.
I had the most thorough cleaning today. The hygeniest Chris was so professional and patient. She explained each step and provided educated me without making me feel embarrassed. The provider was also kind, he did a follow up after and actually talked to me. Neither made me feel rushed and they answered my questions and addressed my concerns. I am so satisfied. I'll be back in a few week for a teeth whitening procedure. So excited!!!! From the front desk, X-ray tech to the providers, all were welcoming and efficient. Thank you!!!!!

What Can I Expect from Bone Grafting?
The steps of bone grafting surgery will depend on where the graft comes from and the amount of grafting being done.
- Autograft: The donor bone may be taken from another bone in your body, such as your hip, chin, or shin.
- Allograft: An allograft uses bone harvested from another person.
- Xenograft: A xenograft bone graft is taken from an animal, generally a cow.
- Alloplast: This is a synthetic bone graft.
In your consultation, we will discuss your grafting options and help you determine the best choice for your particular needs.
Once the graft is ready to be placed, we will use local anesthesia to numb the treatment area and place an incision in the gums to expose the jawbone. We will carefully pull your gum away from the bone to expose the area being grafted. The graft will be attached to the jawbone with collagen and proteins that encourage the graft to attach and grow. The gum tissue will be closed with sutures, and your mouth will be cleaned. We are proud to use state-of-the-art technologies at our New York City office to make this process as simple and seamless as possible.
What Can I Expect when Recovering from a Bone Graft?
Over the following 6 – 9 months, the graft will bond with your jaw, a process known as osseointegration. During this timeframe, it's important to maintain a good oral care routine with brushing and flossing, along with utilizing any products suggested by our team. We may write a prescription for antibiotics or pain medication to help ease any discomfort and inflammation you experience during your recovery. You may need to make additional appointments at East Village Dental Center for progress checks and to determine when your mouth is ready for a dental implant — we will go over this during your consultation.
