Identified between a tooth-colored filling and a full crown, an inlay or onlay can restore a decayed or damaged tooth. Used on molars and pre-molars, an inlay covers the indented center of a tooth while an onlay covers the tooth's upper, rounded edges. Like dental fillings and crowns, inlays and onlays can be made with different materials — porcelain, metal, and composite resin. Our dental team is dedicated to helping our patients better understand onlays and inlays and how they can enhance your oral health so you can make the best choice about how to treat your tooth. Who Can Have Dental Inlays and Onlays?
An inlay or onlay is a fantastic option when you have a damaged tooth or a large cavity that is too big to get filled but doesn't require the full coverage of a crown. At your dental exam, we will examine your digital x-rays to determine the ideal treatment for your tooth. If an inlay or onlay is chosen, we will discuss the available materials that will best meet your requirements.
East Village Dental Center Reviews
Everyone was super sweet and nice to me. The Pisces woman who took my X-rays was lovely and wonderful to talk to. Super quick too. The kind lady who did my cleaning was super gentle and communicative. And the doctor was open and willing to address any questions. Glad this is my new dental office!
Very professional dental clinic with a welcoming atmosphere. The staff is friendly and the dentist is highly skilled, explaining each step clearly and gently. The clinic is clean, modern, and comfortable. I had a very positive experience overall.

UPDATE APRIL 2026East Village Dental center continues to slay when it comes to painless patient care. Had a deep cleaning today and was very apprehensive about pain. The dental hygienist was an absolute gem. Wish I remembered her name (a blonde lady with an Eastern bloc accent) , but she made sure the procedure was smooth and painless. This was also my experience when I got a filling redone last year. There are tons of dentists in my neighborhood, but I wouldn’t think of getting a dental procedure anywhere other than East Village Dental Center. And neither should you.*********************My husband has a lot of anxiety about going to the dentist, and the staff made him feel very comfortable. They did very invasive work on him and he was pain free throughout. This inspired me to begin coming here, and the staff made me feel very comfortable. The hygienist explained everything she was doing and put me at ease. I would highly recommend them.ETA: 2022 and still have great things to say about East Village Dental. Professional and friendly staff. Still recommend them.

What Can I Expect when Getting a Dental Inlay or Onlay?
After applying local anesthesia to numb your gums, we will begin by removing areas of decay. When the enamel is cleaned, impressions will be made of the tooth so your customized inlay and/or onlay can be crafted. Once the inlay or onlay is ready, we will have you come back in so we can carefully place and bond it to your tooth. We may polish the edges or adjust the fit so that your tooth is suitably coated and feels right.
What is Recovering from Getting an Inlay or Onlay Like?
If only local anesthesia is used, you can leave after your appointment and return to your regular activities. You might feel mild discomfort, swelling, or sensitivity for a couple of days once your inlay or onlay is placed. Please contact our New York City office should you have any concerns after your procedure. Your inlay or onlay should be taken care of like your natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing. You need to schedule yearly dental examinations and bi-annual cleanings at East Village Dental Center so we can assess the wear and health of the onlay or inlay. With appropriate maintenance, it should last for many years before needing to be repaired or replaced.
