Crown lengthening is often performed to enhance the overall look and health of the teeth. Crown lengthening can come off as an odd term to some since it sounds like it involves adding material to the tooth — a more precise term would be crown exposure since gum tissue is removed to reveal more of the tooth. Many of our patients want crown lengthening to correct a "gummy" smile. Crown lengthening can also be done if not enough of your crown is visible to hold a filling, crown, or other restoration. To get more information, schedule a consultation at East Village Dental Center in New York, NY.

Candidates for crown lengthening should be in good general health, particularly when it comes to the gums. Problems like gum (periodontal) disease may have to be treated before crown lengthening can be performed. Most often, crown lengthening is done for aesthetic reasons to fix a "gummy" smile. In these cases, excess gum tissue could be eliminated to improve the ratio of gum tissue to enamel and offer you an even gumline. In some cases, crown lengthening can also be needed to perform a dental restoration in order to reveal more of the tooth so as to put a filling, crown, or bridge.

Before your crown lengthening procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb the needed regions to make the process more comfortable. When you are ready, the gum tissue is removed in small slivers to slowly reveal more of your enamel, and then your gumline will be shaped for an even look. When we have finished the crown lengthening process, we will seal the gum tissue to stop bleeding and then rinse your mouth.

After your crown lengthening treatment, your mouth may be sore and inflamed. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers can usually help reduce your discomfort, but we may write a prescription for pain medication and/or antibiotics if needed. Many of our patients find it helpful to follow a liquid or soft food diet for the first few days as their gums recover. You should carefully clean your mouth with soft brushing and mouthwash; however, you should avoid dental floss. In some cases, you might need to schedule another appointment at East Village Dental Center to monitor your recovery. We will also assess your gums and oral health at your annual dental exams.
